Fun fact: The majority of the wine you see on the store shelves are meant to be drank now, or within 5 years. I mention that, because aging wine and properly storing your wine can be two different things.
If your goal is to age wine, you first have to find an age-worthy wine- which is a whole different topic for another day. But to safely store your wine for the purpose of consumption within the next couple of years, then you are have come to the right place!
In order to store your wine correctly, here are a few tips:
- Keep it at a cool and steady temperature. Store your wine in a place that doesn’t fluctuate as much throughout the year, and ideally in temperature ranging between 45-65 degrees. Humidity is also something to factor in, as this should be around 75% humidity as well. The easiest solution to accomplish all 3 of these would be a wine fridge.
- Store your bottles in a dark place. You must avoid direct sunlight, and even fluorescent lighting as it will damage your wine. If your home does not have many options for dark storage, we really like these stackable wine boxes.
- Lastly, store your wine horizontally. This is especially important for corked wine. This keeps the cork from drying out and potentially letting oxygen into your wine. A cost effective way of achieving this would be your standard wine racks! We love these. They are stackable, so as your wine collection grows you can just keep adding racks to suit your needs!

It helped when you said that you should keep it at 45 degrees. My parents want to start storing wine in their basement in a couple of weeks since it has always been something that they have wanted to do together. I’ll pass these tips along to them as they search for wine to get for their collection!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing 🙂
